LAKE STEVENS — Tony Scoringe plans to be on the water Saturday morning for his shift in the annual Lake Stevens Rowing Club Row-A-Thon.
He will be one of the members of the club who will be trying to raise money for new equipment. The 24-hour event is scheduled from 3 p.m. Friday until 3 p.m
. Saturday.
The Lake Stevens Rowing Club is made up of 90 members and includes both youth and adult rowing programs. The Row-A-Thon is the club’s major fundraiser and this is the eighth year for the event.
Anywhere from two to 10 boats are planned to be on Lake Stevens throughout the event, said Scoringe, the club’s public relations officer. He’s set to pilot one of four safety boats from midnight to 4 a.m. in addition to his rowing shift.
“I’ve driven safety launches during the night runs the last couple of years,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s really serene. All you hear is the slapping of the oars.”
Scoringe would like the atmosphere to be louder during the day when residents and visitors are driving around the lake. He wants to hear residents honk horns to cheer on rowers or give donations on boat docks.
The money that is raised will be put toward equipment such as competitive rowing shells that can cost up to $40,000, oars and rowing machines, Scoringe said. The club raised $3,000 during last year’s event.
Donations also can be made by visiting the club’s website at www.lakestevensrowing.com.
