MARYSVILLE — A Marysville Getchell High School student was killed and two more were seriously injured Monday afternoon when a car struck a tree in the Getchell area.
The crash was reported just before 2:30 p.m. in the 8100 block of 108th Street NE, west of Highway 9.
The three young men were in a Honda Civic that left the road and struck the tree, said Rebecca Hover, spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters used the jaws of life to extract two young men, including the driver, Getchell Fire Chief Travis Hots said. The third crash victim was ejected.
The driver died at the scene, Hover said. The two passengers were taken by helicopter to a Seattle hospital.
One of them was in critical condition, and the other was in serious condition, Hover said. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
The Marysville School District issued a statement Monday night about the young man’s death. He was a student in the Bio-Med Academy, it said.
“All of us in the Marysville School District extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the family of the student killed in the accident,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are also with the families of the two students injured in the crash as they go through grieving the loss of a son’s friend and the healing process for their own children.”
One of the injured students attended the Bio-Med Academy, and the other attended School for the Entrepreneur, said Jodi Runyon, executive assistant to the district superintendent.
There will be crisis counselors on campus Tuesday at Marysville Getchell and Marysville Pilchuck, Runyon said. They will remain on campus as long as they are needed.
