Granite Falls Spring Turkey Shoot is Sunday

GRANITE FALLS — There should be plenty of frozen turkeys and hams to give to sharp shooters at the Granite Falls Sportsmen’s Club Spring Turkey Shoot.

The club bought 400 of the frozen meats to hand out as prizes on Sunday at their 47th annual Spring Turkey Shoot, said Carol Cornish, a club board member.

“We always give out gift certificates if we don’t have enough,” Cornish said. “It’s great fun,”

The club hosts Turkey Shoots twice a year, on the Sundays before Easter and Thanksgiving. Up to 400 people have attended past spring Turkey Shoots.

Novice to experienced shooters can try using shotguns to hit clay turkey targets during the event set to begin at 10 a.m. at 20319 Gun Club Road. Games are $4 each or $22 for five games and a guaranteed win. Bingo games, door prizes and a raffle are also planned as part of the event.

The Turkey Shoot is more than an anticipated community event, Cornish said. It’s also the club’s fundraiser and a chance for members to collect nonperishable food donations for the Granite Falls Food Bank. The club traditionally collects food at the Turkey Shoots and donates any leftover frozen turkeys to the food bank, Cornish said.

The club also offers basic hunter education classes and other events throughout the year. Cornish organizes an annual Ladies Day in September for women who want to learn how to shoot. The Turkey Shoot is a good time for anyone to learn, she added.

“It’s a lot of fun bringing new kids here and teaching them how to shoot and be safe with firearms,” Cornish said. “With so many people there, we concentrate a lot on safety.”

The club has 72 members. About 25 club volunteers plan to work the event to ensure the safety of participants, Cornish said.
