How two produce boxes compare

I made a major goof this Tuesday. Somehow I scheduled a produce box from SPUD and New Roots Organics to be delivered the same day. So now my family has $80 worth of fruits and vegetables to eat this week, plus all of the food from our garden. Now I have to figure out how to make my children eat salad.

Instead of feeling like an idiot, I’m trying to salvage the situation by making a blog post out of it. Actually, I have actually always wondered which company offered the better deal, and now I can see a side by side comparison!

I first got hooked on organic produce boxes when I was pregnant with my son and working full time. I knew I needed to be eating healthy foods for my growing baby, but I did not have a lot of time to shop. Then, when I was at home with a newborn, it was hard to make it to the grocery store. Adding a second kid to the mix didn’t make heading to Top Foods any easier. By that point, we were pretty much hooked on Pioneer Organic produce boxes, a company later purchased by SPUD.

Having a produce box delivered each week ends up saving me a bit of money because it keeps me out of the grocery store. I don’t know about you, but I can’t go to Fred Meyer without coming back with at least $15 worth of extra items my kids begged me to buy.

The other great thing about produce boxes is that they make children excited about fruits and vegetables. Both my kids LOVE unloading the box each week, and they usually start eating a carrot right away.

My family has been very loyal SPUD customers until last winter when I found out that New Roots Organics sponsored Edmonds Comedy Night, a benefit for local public schools. That was enough to make me switch over to New Roots Organics.

Both services are very comparable I think. To me, there is no clear winner. But you can click on the pictures and make your own decision. The New Roots Organics box cost me about $40 and the SPUD box cost $36.93.

Finally, I can’t write a blog post about produce boxes in Puget Sound without mentioning Full Circle. That’s another great option that my family has tried and enjoyed.
