EDMONDS — Sloan Morrison had 11 kills to lead Meadowdale to a 3-0 win over Edmonds-Woodway in a nonleague match.
The somewhat lopsided victory was encouraging for Meadowdale, but also bittersweet since players and coaches on both teams are close friends.
“We were very on tonight,” said Meadowdale head coach Machen Shrum. Specifically, Shrum said Morrison dominated in the middle and her setter did a good job mixing up sets and avoiding Edmonds-Woodway’s Sid Eck, who still managed 10 kills.
The match was a meeting of best friends Julianne Kossian of Meadowdale and Maddie Houvener of Edmonds-Woodway. The two played up their rivalry before the match, but when the time came and the Mavericks were coming on strong, Kossian took some time to coach her friend.
“I think there is a lot of trash talking before they play,” said Shrum. “It’s never fun to be on the losing end. … Julianne was talking to Maddie through the net, encouraging her through the match. … It’s maybe not what I want from my player, but I thought it was nice.”
That attitude is mirrored at the coaching level. Shrum reported on the game from a restaurant where she was having dinner with Warriors head coach Nicole Bordeaux. “We all want each other to do well,” said Shrum. “It’s a family thing.”
