Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird underwent successful surgery to repair the labrum in her left hip the team announced on Friday.
The surgery took place in Vail, Colo. and was performed by Dr. Marc. J. Philippon. Bird will remain in Colorado through the weekend and then begin rehabilitation.
“We’re excited as an organization that Sue came through the surgery successfully,” Seattle Storm head coach and general manager Brian Agler said. “Dr. Philippon said she must have been very courageous to have played through the injury. He is very optimistic the surgery went well. We look forward to seeing Sue at full health next season.
Last offseason Bird had the same surgery performed on her right hip and made a full recovery to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia beginning in January. The timetable for being ready to return to action is estimated at 8-12 weeks.
“It’s really pretty much the same,” Bird said, “which is good because I know what to expect, I know how to get through it and the best part is I know it will be successful. I’m very excited to put the hip stuff in the past because I’ve been dealing with it for a long time and the last month was tough.”
