MARYSVILLE — History has a way of repeating itself, especially at the Hole in the Wall Invitational.

Just like last year, Glacier Peak’s Amy-Eloise Neale made running look easy, taking first place honors for the fourth consecutive year. And like last year, Neale broke the course record, finishing with a time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds — a 35 second improvement over last year’s meet.

Neale’s nearest competition was also identical to last year’s Hole in the Wall. Glacier Peak teammate Katie Bianchini finished in second place, 1 minute and 12 seconds behind Neale. Bianchini narrowly edged third-place finisher Sally Larson of Cedar Park Christian with a time of 18:22.

“I think I’m a lot faster than last year,” said Neale on how she physically prepared for her record-breaking performance on Saturday. “You just know from your training and from all the days of practice that you’ve put in, and you see your improvement. You come into a race like this and you say ‘I know that I can go faster than last year.’”

And what about her mental preparation?

“You have to be aware of what you’re capable of,” said Neale. “A lot of girls struggle with that. They get to the second mile of the race and they don’t have a clue of how fast they can actually go. So being aware of that and knowing, ‘Yeah I can get this course record’ (helped mentally).”

Although Bianchini ran further back from her teammate and finished six seconds behind her 2011 time, there may have been a very valid reason.

“Katie had to take the SAT’s (earlier today) and just got here 15 minutes before the race,” added Neale. “I was really excited that she did so well considering she literally had no warm-up.”

Due to the efforts of Neale and Bianchini — along with Katherine Dittman’s 19th place finish, Mikayla Ingram finishing in 31st and Megan Davis crossing the finish line at 32nd — Glacier Peak was able to take home first place honors overall in girls Division 1.

On the boy’s side, Edmonds-Woodway’s Jack Griffing finished in third place with an impressive time of 15:55 to lead all local finishers. Jack Pearce of Mountlake Terrace finished in sixth place with a time of 15:59 and King’s Andrew Ayers finished in ninth place with a time of 16:09.

Snohomish nearly finished in the top spot for the boys team standings overall in Division 1, losing to first place Redmond by just two points, 199-201. Lake Stevens finished in third place with 230 points.

This year’s Hole in the Wall — now in its 29th year — had 72 teams compete, an increase of 20 teams from the previous year. Divisions were made up of freshman-sophomore, junior varsity and two varsity divisions.

“We have to attribute the success of the meet to the volunteers,” said Lakewood head coach Jeff Sowards regarding how the invitational has kept growing. “Also this year, we are hosting the district 1 and 2 2A, 3A and 4A district’s here. So a lot of teams considered this as a practice meet that they’ll run again in about three weeks.”

Despite some history repeating itself on Saturday, their was a first for this year’s meet. All runners were fitted with a chip timing system for the first time in the event’s history.

“We applied for a grant with the city of Marysville,” added Sowards. “So this is the first time we’ve used the system and it is a little glitchy, but we can produce results instantaneously.”
