I am a student at Snohomish High School and I would like inform you about an event going on at our school this year. To celebrate the large election at both the state and federal levels, our senior government classes are putting on a mass mock election. Candidates ranging from local offices up to the president of the United States are being represented by groups of students. These groups are hanging up posters around school, campaigning before and after school, handing out flyers, making video ads, giving announcements, participating in political debates during lunch, polling the student body, and much more.
The students are putting it all on and the entire student body gets a chance to vote. The goal is to compare our election results with the results of the real election, educate ourselves and our student body, as well as try to get a greater voter turnout rate than the national average. We would all like to see our state get more excited about the upcoming election. Often the citizens of Washington feel disconnected from the presidential election and forget that the state level elections are potentially even more important.
My group is a group of four people. We are working toward getting Sharon Hanek elected as state treasurer. Sharon is a Republican who we feel has the experience and dedication that we need for our state. I was drawn to her because she is an accountant and has 30 years of CPA, tax advisory, and community service experience involving money management. She is a very relatable person and looks out for the youth of our state. She has been involved in Little League, a private school, youth/family service boards, and more. She wants to get Olympia’s money organized and has the knowledge to do it. We’ve done our homework and agree, if you want accountability, you have to vote for the accountant.
