Prep girls basketball: Meadowdale 64, Letcher County (KY) 58

SAN DIEGO — Behind Mackenzie Bretz’s 17 points and Julianne Kossian’s 13 points and three 3-pointers Meadowdale defeated Letcher County (KY) 64-58 to win first-place honors in the Surf N’ Slam Tournament in San Diego on Saturday.

The Mavericks’ won despite Letcher County’s all-state first-team standout Kelah Eldridge scoring 25 points.

“We were able to watch (Eldridge) last night after our semi-final game,” said Meadowdale assistant coach Dan Rauch. “So we knew they had two shooters and two solid posts. So we really concentrated on Eldridge in the fourth quarter and we made three big plays at the end.”

The three big plays for the Mavs’ included a lay-in and the making of four consecutive free-throws in the games final 1:23, all while holding Letcher scoreless during that time.

The first place finish for Meadowdale at the Surf N’ Slam was a first for the current coaching staff, but not for the school as a whole. The teams last overall first place finish in the annual San Diego tournament came in 1997 under former head coach Karen Blair.
