KELOWNA, B.C. — For the second straight game the Kelowna Rockets beat the Everett Silvertips with their power play.
Kelowna scored three power-play goals, and the Rockets topped the Tips 4-1 Thursday night, handing Everett its eighth straight defeat.
When the teams met Sunday in Everett, Kelowna scored two five-on-three goals and added a third just as a penalty expired, and the Rockets hung on to beat the Tips 3-2.
This time the Rockets were an efficient 3-for-5 with the advantage. That included another five-on-three goal.
Ryan Olsen scored two goals to lead Kelowna (42-13-3-1), with both of his goals coming on the power play. JT Barnett and Colton Sissons also scored for the Rockets, while Jackson Whistle made 20 saves to earn the win in goal.
Landon Oslanski scored for Everett (21-32-1-4) with a shot that went clean through the net, causing a long video review. Daniel Cotton made 27 saves in net for the Tips.
Kelowna inevitably opened the scoring on the power play 9 minutes, 1 second into the game. Myles Bell wristed a shot from the point, and Olsen tipped it past Cotton to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead.
The Rockets doubled their lead 13:43 into the second period. Barnett intercepted an Everett outlet pass and shot past Cotton, making it 2-0 against his former team.
It seemed the second period ended with the Rockets leading 2-0. However, the Tips asked for a video review on an earlier play, and after eight minutes it was determined Oslanski’s powerful drive went clean through the net. The goal was awarded at 19:29, and 31 seconds were added to the third period as the teams were already in the locker rooms for the intermission.
The Tips were back in the game, but it was Kelowna’s power play that sealed it. The Rockets received a lengthy five-on-three, and Sissons put in a rebound at 7:11 to restore Kelowna’s two-goal lead. Then Olsen clinched it with another power-play marker at 16:26, putting in an easy tap-in after a nice passing move.
