USA Curling names Clark its Male Athlete of the Year

Brady Clark of Lynnwood, who was the skip (or captain) of the men’s national championship team, has been named USA Curling’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2013.

Clark, 35, who represents Seattle’s Granite Curling Club, also led Team USA to a ninth-place finish at the recent World Men’s Championship in Victoria, B.C., where he was the top-ranked skip in shooting percentage for much of round-robin play.

“I was very honored when I got the news,” Clark said in a statement. “My thoughts right away turned to my team. Curling has always been a team game and always will be. Your team is helping you make shots. It takes a team around you to make every shot.”

This is the first time Clark has been named Male Athlete of the Year. He previously was a member of two teams that earned team-of-the-year honors.

“Winning an award like this is definitely an honor, but for me the first time you ever win a national championship is pretty special,” he said. “Those definitely are the highest honors. An award like this recognizes a lot of hard work that went in to being able to perform at a high level.”

Three crowned GNAC champs

A trio of Snohomish and Island county athletes won individual titles at the May 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field championships at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore.

Jon Poolman of Western Washington, a sophomore from Langley and South Whidbey High School, placed first in the men’s 400 meters in 47.82 seconds. Dak Riek, a WWU junior from Everett and Mariner High School, won the men’s 5,000 in 14:51.45. And Bryan Mack, a Central Washington senior from Arlington, had the top mark in the long jump at 23 feet, 4 inches.

Poolman also helped WWU’s 4×400 relay team to a first-place finish (3:15.17) and the 4×100 relay to a third-place showing (42.10). Mack was second in the 100 (10.85), third in the triple jump (46-61/4) and helped the CWU 4×100 relay team to second place (41.89).

Western Washington won the men’s title. Alaska Anchorage captured the women’s title.

Lacrosse players honored

Four girls from Snohomish were named last week to the 2013 North Sound All-Conference High School Varsity Lacrosse Team.

Honored were senior Hanna Dalrymple (midfield), and juniors Kayla Petz (attack), Megan Davis (attack) and Hailey Nyquist (defender). Nyquist plays for Lakeside High School in Seattle. Dalrymple, Petz and Davis attend Glacier Peak and play for the Snohomish team.
