Mountlake Terrace softball loses state opener to Prairie

LACEY – In a game that featured five home runs, the Prairie Falcons got the final – and biggest – of the contest.

Prairie’s Bridget Guiney hit a walk-off three-run home run, after Mountlake Terrace’s Hannah Wilcox hit her second homer of the game in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, to give the Falcons a 7-4 win in the first round of the 3A state tournament Friday morning at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

Wilcox’s second solo home run of the game came with two strikes and two outs in the top of the seventh, and tied the score at four. It remained that way until the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Bussey was intentionally walked, and then Holly Kersanty reached base after she hit a ground ball back to Hawks’ pitcher Maddy Kristjanson who tried to throw Bussey out at second base.

Bussey was safe and, after Sarah Landstrom reached on a fielder’s choice, Guiney ended the game on a 3-2 pitch from Kristjanson (6-4). The home run came a couple pitches after a called ball that the Mountlake Terrace fans believed was a strike.

Kristjanson helped herself out on offense with a two-run homer in the third inning – soon after Wilcox got the Hawks on the board with her first home run. Kristjanson struck out seven Prairie batters and scattered six hits.

Bussey went 2-for-2 with a home run, double, two RBI and two runs scored. She was also intentionally walked twice.

Mountlake Terrace will play Bonney Lake at 2 p.m. in a loser-out game.
