PASCO — It took a few extra innings, but the road remained kind to the Everett AquaSox early in the 2013 season. The Sox have now won their first six games away from home and fifth straight overall after finishing off a three-game sweep of the Tri-City Dust Devils with a 3-2 win in 11 innings on Thursday night.
DJ Peterson scored the go-ahead run in the 11th on a wild pitch. Everett capitalized on a critical error by Dust Devils shortstop Alec Mehrten that kept the inning alive.
Peterson reached on an infield single with one out. Justin Seager then hit a groundball right to Mehrten at short. Instead of starting a potential inning-ending double play, Mehrten had the ball go between his legs, which allowed Peterson to advance to third. Huascar Brazoban’s first pitch to the next hitter, Christian Carmichael, got behind catcher Ashley Graeter and Peterson was able to score his second run of the game.
Peterson finished 2-for-5, while Jack Reinheimer and Reggie Lawson also had two hits for the Sox. Mehrten and Michael Tauchman each went 3-for-4 for Tri-City.
Ricardo Pereira threw three scoreless innings to earn the win.
Everett received another strong starting pitching effort. Tyler Olson blanked Tri-City through the first six innings, before being removed with one-out in the seventh. But the Sox bullpen couldn’t hold the lead as the Dust Devils finally snapped a 23 inning scoreless streak and tied the game with two runs in the seventh.
Michael Tauchman led off with a single and one out later, Patrick Hutcheson singled to left to end Olson’s night. Sox reliever Tyler Wright came in and struggled with his control. Wright walked the first batter he faced, Jose Monzon to load the bases. The left-hander then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Tauchman to score the Dust Devils first run since the first inning of Tuesday’s game. Wright retired Galvez on a grounder to second for the second out, but then walked Wilson Soriano and Alec Mehrten to force in the tying run.
Everett opened the scoring in the fifth. Lawson led off with a single, stole second and took third when catcher Ashley Graeter’s throw went into centerfield. With the infield drawn in, Michael Faulkner hit a grounder to second baseman Cesar Galvez. Once Galvez threw to first to record the out on Faulkner, Lawson broke for home and beat first baseman Patrick Hutcheson’s throw with a head-first slide.
The Sox added to their lead in the sixth. Peterson singled to lead off the inning and scored when Seager roped a double down the left-field line.
