Navy Ensign Riley Cornett, a 2005 Stanwood High School graduate and a 2012 graduate of Central Washington University, graduated May 31 from Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. He was awarded the Marine Corps League Physical Fitness Award for earning the highest grade in physical fitness. Cornett has been designated a naval flight officer. He is based in Pensacola, Fla., where he is beginning his training. He is the son of Laurel and Brad Niven of Camano Island and Mike and Carol Cornett of Lake Stevens.

Army Pvt. Jacob S.D. Peden has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Peden is the brother of Amey Iroz of Everett.

Army Spc. James M. Cooney Jr. has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Cooney is the brother of Monica Cooney of Oak Harbor. He is a 2004 graduate of Frank W. Cox High School, Virginia Beach, Va., and he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Roanoke College.
