We’ll start with what has been the dominant storyline of the past week. Pete Carroll gave an update on Percy Harvin, though there’s still not a lot of news other than that the surgery went well:
“What we’ve heard so far is that the surgery we really well,” Carroll said. “There’s a long rehab process coming up, and he’s going to be in New York for a couple of weeks to start off the rehab, then we’ll get him back here in due time. We don’t have any dates or timelines or any of that stuff, but we’re going to be very optimistic and hope he can get back as soon as possible, and we’re glad we could get him fixed up, and he’ll be ready to go eventually.”
Asked if that meant Harvin will be back this season, Carroll said, “With all the information we got, we’re hopeful that he will have a chance to get back.”
As for injuries, Carroll updated several injury situations, and said that of the players who have been sitting out recently, all should be back relatively soon (that doesn’t include some of the guys on the PUP list like Chris Clemons).
“All the things we’re dealing with, we’re very hopeful that they’ll get back within a few days,” he said.
Among the “things we’re dealing with” are a sore shoulder for LB Bobby Wagner, a sore shoulder for TE Luke Willson, who did practice but in a red jersey, and a sore knee for rookie DT Jesse Williams, who missed a couple of days, returned to action Wednesday, then sat out today. Also out were CB Jeremy Lane (foot), TE Darren Fells (hamstring) and TE Michael Palmer (groin).
As for the players on the PUP list, Carroll said RB Robert Turbin has, “got a chance to get back next week, for sure in two weeks,” and Carroll said TE Zach Miller is on a similar timeline.
Asked about DE Chris Clemons, who is recovering from ACL surgery, Carroll said, “Clem’s doing really well. They’re really excited about the progress he’s been making. We’ve got some hopeful thoughts about that… he’s doing well.”
Asked if hopeful thoughts meant a possible appearance in preseason games, Carroll said, “That’s hopeful, yeah. That’s hopeful.”
With Harvin out, the Seahawks don’t have an established kick returner (they released Leon Washington following the trade for Harvin) and when asked who might step into that role, Carroll mentioned WR Golden Tate, CB Jeremy Lane, RB Christine Michael and WR Bryan Walters as possibilities.
Another name that could figure into the mix now is receiver Perez Ashford, an undrafted rookie out of Northern Illinois who the Seahawks claimed off of waivers Thursday. Ashford, who has spent time with Cleveland and New England already, returned punts and kickoffs at NIU. To make room on the roster, the Seahawks waived/injured WR Greg Herd, who had an ice pack on his shoulder during Thursday’s practice.
As for the day’s practice, it was a fairly light session, in part because the team is having a mock game tomorrow. Among the standouts were CB Will Blackmon, who had a pair of interceptions, WR Jermaine Kearse, who continues to have a very strong camp, and TE Cooper Helfet, who after a quiet couple of days had some very nice catches, including one diving effort along the sideline.
“Cooper had a great day today,” said Carroll who noted that the two went to the same junior high. “… He had a great day today, he really did. He made about five catches today, about three of them were circus catches. He had started camp a little slow. He’s got great hands, but they really came together for him, so it’s fun to see him doing that.”
