Opponents and supporters of a food labeling initiative begin airing television ads this morning.
And the airwave battle on Initiative 522 may not end until Election Day.
As I reported Sunday, the No on 522 campaign has reserved time on Seattle television stations right up to Nov. 5 which is the last day of balloting.
At the time I filed that story, records showed the Yes on 522 campaign had blocked time starting in October. But the campaign responded to opponents and went on the air this morning.
Each side is running a 30-second ad.
The one for opponents that I saw features former Washington Attorney General Ken Eikenberry describing the measure as misleading because it will not require labels on many products containing genetically modified organisms such as meat and dairy products.
I also saw an ad from supporters featuring a woman holding a box of Corn Crunchies on which is written “partially produced with genetic engineering.” Her message is that the initiative will give consumers information on the food they eat. Turns out that is not a real product and the box was designed for the commercial.
You can watch that ad here. There’s also a second ad from supporters in which a variety of people are telling why they back the measure. You can see that one here.
