EVERETT — A south Snohomish County man accused of carving a three-inch gash in his ex-girlfriend’s throat on Oct. 2 apparently was motivated by anger over being asked to pay child support, according to prosecutors.
Yonathan A. Carreno Duarte, 28, has a daughter with the woman he allegedly attacked in an Everett parking lot, deputy prosecutor Paul Stern said Friday in Snohomish County Superior Court papers.
The relationship ended not long after the woman, 20, gave birth in January. She told police that Carreno Duarte instructed her not to put his name on the birth certificate because he’s not legally in the U.S.
When Carreno Duarte learned that she’d sought the state’s help in getting child support for the girl, he called the woman in a rage, Stern said in court papers.
“He told her that he was going back to Brazil and their daughter would never see him again. After his tirade he hung up,” the prosecutor wrote.
He later called back and asked to meet the woman to talk about next steps. She agreed, but only if it was someplace in public. They settled on the parking lot outside a south Everett grocery store.
Carreno Duarte told her that he wore surgical gloves to their meeting to keep his hands warm, according to court papers. He asked her to accompany him to a more private corner of the parking lot.
She did, bringing their daughter along in the stroller.
He asked how much child support she was “going to take out of him.” After being told about $250 a month, he allegedly pulled out a large knife and attacked.
The knife apparently broke apart but not before the woman was stabbed multiple times and received a cut to her neck so deep that the tendons were visible.
“She explained that during the time of this assault, she had their infant daughter in a stroller next to them,” Stern said.
The woman was rushed to a Seattle hospital for treatment. The child was uninjured.
Carreno Duarte fled and surrendered to police the next day. He faces roughly 10 to 12 years in prison if convicted as charged of first-degree domestic violence assault.
He’s being held at the county jail in Everett on $200,000 bail and also faces a hold by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration.
