MARYSVILLE — Lindsey and Bailie Weikel each scored a goal to give Marysville Getchell a 2-1 victory over Mountlake Terrace in a 3A District 1 tournament first-round match that, according to coach Wayne Nash, is the first playoff win for the school in any sport.
Lindsey Weikel provided the first goal for the Chargers in the 14th minute off an assist from Bailie Weikel. Later with the match tied at 1-1, Bailie was able to speed past a number of Hawks defenders to volley in a pass from senior forward Kelsee Crenshaw to give Marysville Getchell the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal.
“It was a good back-and-forth battle,” said Chargers head coach Wayne Nash. “It was the third time we faced Terrace this year and you could tell that we knew a lot about each other. Once we got into the game we did a good job dealing with their pressure and took advantage of our good opportunities when we had them.”
In advancing to the next round of the district tournament the Chargers are assured at least two more matches, with the first coming Tuesday against No. 1 seed Shorecrest at Shoreline Stadium.
“They are a team that’s seasoned in the playoffs,” said Nash. “We were missing a few people the one time we played, but now we have those people back and it should be a very good game. We have what it takes to compete with them.”
