The boys and girls basketball teams start district playoffs next week and there is still a lot of movement in the Wesco standings that will have an impact on the seeding for the tournaments.
Here’s a look at the how the district tournament seedings could shake out this week and the games to watch:
Boys 4A Districts
Jackson and Arlington have both secured the No. 1 seeds and all of the teams that will be in the district tournament are locked up, with Lake Stevens, Lynnwood and Mariner left out. Now it’s just trying to figure out how the teams will be sorted out from seeds 2-4.
In the 4A North, Snohomish (8-5 in Wesco) has the inside track on the No. 2 seed with just one game to play despite the fact that game is against Arlington. Mount Vernon (6-6) can grab the No. 2 seed only if it wins out — which would include a win over Arlington in the season finale — and Snohomish loses to Arlington tonight. If Monroe (5-8) win its finale against Lake Stevens and Mount Vernon loses its final two games, the Bearcats are still the No. 4 seed based on their loss to Cascade.
In the 4A South, Edmonds-Woodway (9-4) is locked into the No. 2 seed due to Kamiak’s loss to Lynnwood earlier in the season. The Knights (7-6) can tie the Warriors if they win tonight and somehow upset Jackson in the finale and Edmonds-Woodway loses its final game to Cascade, but that earlier season loss to Lynnwood and E-W’s sweep of the Royals gives the Warriors the tiebreaker.
That loss could also hurt Kamiak in terms of the No. 4 seed. If Cascade (6-7) sweeps the final two games and Kamiak loses its final two the Bruins are the No. 3 seed, but the Bruins can also earn the No. 3 seed if they beat Lynnwood but lose to E-W and Kamiak drops final two because they’d be 2-0 against Lynnwood compared to Kamiak’s 1-1.
Girls 4A Districts
The No. 1 seeds are figured out with Lynnwood and Arlington locking up those in the South and North, respectively, and Jackson will also be the No. 2 seed.
Edmonds-Woodway’s win over Kamiak gives the Warriors the inside track for the No. 3 seed. With the two teams now tied, E-W faces Cascade in its final game while Kamiak has a much stiffer test against Jackson. If both teams end up tied, E-W would be the No. 3 seed based on head-to-head matchup.
The 4A North is wide open. Arlington’s win over Snohomish (7-7) and the win by Lake Stevens (6-7) over Mount Vernon means that both the Panthers, Vikings and Monroe (7-6) could end tied to end the season. (Monroe would have to beat Lake Stevens on Wednesday for that to happen). According to the preseason tiebreaker draw, Monroe would be the No. 2 seed, Snohomish No. 3 and Lake Stevens No. 4.
Girls 3A Districts
Everything is up in the air in the in the Wesco 3A North and South divisions, except for strangely enough the seemingly always tough-to-figure out Ferndale factor. The Golden Eagles are locked into the No. 2 seed for the North, which moves Marysville Pilchuck into the No. 4 spot. Ferndale (9-1) can’t be the North No. 1 seed due to the league’s agreement.
As for the No. 1 seed in the 3A North, Everett and Stanwood meet tonight in a game that will decide it. An Everett victory will give the Seagulls the No. 1 seed based on a head-to-head tiebreaker, while Stanwood wins the No. 1 seed if it wins. The Spartans would be the No. 1 seed even if it ends up tied with Everett due to the Wesco tiebreaker draw before the season.
In the 3A South nothing is figured out and in fact current first-place team Mountlake Terrace (10-1) could win the league or finish third. The Hawks face Shorecrest (9-2) and Glacier Peak (9-2) in the final two games and if they sweep they’ll be the No. 1 seed. Shorecrest takes on Meadowdale (4-7) in the finale and can win the league if they sweep and Terrace beats Glacier Peak. The Grizzlies, who face Shorewood (5-6) tonight, can win the league if they sweep based on tiebreakers.
Meadowdale, which is a game behind Shorewood, can still grab the final district playoff spot with a win tonight against Marysville Getchell and a pair of losses by Shorewood due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
