Family fire safety: Safe Kids Snohomish County, which works to prevent unintentional childhood injury, urges families to review and practice emergency plans and fire safety this weekend as the switch to Daylight Saving Time. Every day, on average, a child dies in a home fire and 293 other children receive non-fatal, unintentional fire or burn injuries.
“Fire can spread rapidly through a home, leaving a family as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds,” said Shawneri Guzman, Safe Kids Snohomish County Coordinator. “Along with a properly installed smoke alarm, parents should plan several escape routes out of their home and then designate a safe place to meet. Then practice with your kids so they know exactly what to do.”
She urges parents and guardians to teach children to not hide from firefighters; how to crawl low under smoke; how to touch closed doors to check for heat before opening them; to find two ways out of every room; and designate a family meeting place outside the home.
