ARLINGTON — Archbishop Murphy starting pitcher Evan Haugen gave up just one run on four hits over eight innings to lead Archbishop Murphy to a series-winning victory over Cascade Conference rival Lakewood.
“He was really sharp today,” Archbishop Murphy head coach Stan Taloff said of Haugen. “(Lakewood) is a very aggressive hitting team. He changed speeds and had them off balance all day.”
Friday’s contest was the third straight game between the two teams to go extra innings. Archbishop Murphy won the first matchup in eight innings and Lakewood handed the Wildcats their first league loss on Wednesday, winning in 11 innings.
“It was good for us, we let them off the hook on Wednesday and we were able to come back,” Taloff said of his team’s victory Friday.
Wildcats senior Tyler Klaudt started the rally for Murphy in the eighth inning, leading off with a single. After stealing second base, Klaudt scored on an error by Lakewood’s shortstop.
Besides earning the win on the mound, Haugen batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, the only extra base hit of the game.
