VANCOUVER, B.C. — The short-handed Everett AquaSox couldn’t handle the Vancouver Canadians on Friday night, falling 6-2 in Northwest League baseball action.
Vancouver’s pitching staff shut the Everett offense down for eight innings, and the Canadians’ offense generated enough runs that when the Sox stirred in the ninth, it was too little too late.
Ryan McBroom and Boomer Collins homered to lead Vancouver (17-11).
Kristian Brito went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace Everett (7-21).
Everett had just 17 players in uniform Friday night. The Sox had nine players, including seven of the team’s 13 pitchers, not make the trip because of potential issues at the United States/Canada border with regards to visas and passports. The Sox were hoping to get some reinforcements today, especially for the pitching staff. The shortage forced the Sox to use catcher Luke Guarnaccia as a pitcher for the second time this season.
With the Sox short on pitchers, Lucas Schiraldi gave Everett a much-needed solid spot start. Schiraldi, who had just a pair of one-inning relief appearances under his belt, made it through five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out four, but was still saddled with the loss.
Vancouver opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when McBroom lined a two-run homer over the fence in left.
Runs were scarce until the seventh, when Vancouver got another run via homer, this time on Collins’ solo shot to left.
Then the Canadians broke the game open in the eighth. McBroom smacked an RBI double to right-center, Chris Carlson and Alexis Maldonado rolled run-scoring singles up the middle, and Vancouver’s lead stretched to six.
Everett finally showed some life offensively in the ninth as Sheehan Planas-Arteaga and Brito opened the inning with back-to-back doubles to break the shutout bid. The Sox then loaded the bases with one out. A second run scored on Jordan Cowan’s fielder’s choice grounder, but that’s all Everett could muster.
