As I’m sure many have heard, the Supreme Court ruled on several cases, including the case on buffer-zones as well as the much discussed Hobby Lobby case. It’s immensely disappointing that they ruled the way they did, against American women and families. It’s unbelievable that in 2014 we are still fighting about birth control, women’s safety and bodily autonomy.
Corporations have more rights than half our country, and the Supreme Court has decided that they don’t in fact represent the people. Considering the financial hardship accessing birth control can be, and that 99 percent of women have utilized contraception, having to choose between what’s right for your body and what your employer deems religiously appropriate is a disgusting position to be put in. The decision should be a woman’s own and her employer shouldn’t be able to interfere. Ironically, the outcome of this decision is detrimental to Hobby Lobby’s cause.
Now due to buffer-zones being ruled unconstitutional, people can’t go into a clinic or health center without fear of being verbally or physically attacked. Regardless of why patients are going in, (and 97 percent of the time, it’s for a service other than abortion) people are allowed to create a violent atmosphere to threaten bodily autonomy. However, the Supreme Courthouse itself has a buffer zone vastly larger than the 35 feet of the health centers. The hypocrisy would be laughable if it weren’t so awful.
The War on Women is very real. We need to vote for the sanctity of our rights.
