The burn ban has been lifted for Snohomish County, except in Darrington.
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency called a stage 1 burn ban, which prohibits burning except for in certified wood stoves or fireplace inserts, for Snohomish County Nov. 30. Stagnant air and high pollution levels, largely due to wood smoke, triggered the ban.
With winds picking up this week, the agency lifted the ban for most of Snohomish County and all of King and Pierce counties at noon Tuesday.
However, a burn ban remains in effect for Darrington, where pollution levels were high enough to be considered unhealthy Monday afternoon. A stage 2 burn ban, meaning certified wood stoves and fireplaces also are included in the ban, was issued at noon Monday. That has since been downgraded to a stage 1 burn ban.
Homeowners who have no other adequate source of heat, and have gained previous approval through the agency, can continue to burn during bans. Outdoor fires are not allowed.
Violations carry up to a $1,000 fine, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
