I read the July 3 letters, “Humans rights are a federal issue,” and “White House rainbow good,” and am dismayed at the authors’ comments. To be upfront, I am a Christian who believes that marriage is between a man and woman. That said, I have no problem in LGBT folks being able to have civil unions with the same right as married folks.
The rainbow letter takes issue with the opposition’s “circus side show.” The president did pick a side by displaying the color lights which contradicts the writer’s statement that “the president is under no obligation to pick sides.” If he did nothing, sides would not be picked.
As for the other letter, use of the 14th Amendment to counter the “outcry” to the court ruling is bogus. The amendment does state that “all citizens are guaranteed equal protection of the law.” However, it has no relevance to the opposition’s belief that it is a state’s right. “Equal protection” does not infer federal only. And “equal protection” does not necessarily equate to “rights.”
Both individuals bent the facts/Constitution fit their own beliefs.
