LYNNWOOD — A fire destroyed an abandoned building at a former wrecking yard near Mukilteo Speedway early Tuesday morning.
Fire dispatchers received multiple 911 calls just before 3 a.m. reporting flames coming from the building in the 13400 block of Lake Road in unincorporated Snohomish County north of Lynnwood.
The Mukilteo Speedway runs directly behind the property. The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for about three hours.
The 60-foot-by-100-foot building was in flames when firefighters arrived.
The building had been abandoned after the wrecking yard shut down several years ago.
“We attacked the fire from the outside and had most of the flames knocked down within about 30 minutes. Firefighters continued to deal with hot spots and flare-ups for another couple hours,” said Leslie Hynes, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman.
Firefighters from Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Mukilteo were called in. No one was injured.
The building is a total loss. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire and was unable to determine a cause, but could not rule out transient in the area.
“The building had no power. Witnesses reported seeing transients frequenting the site on a regular basis,” Hynes said.
