Contrary to the opinion stated in the Sunday Herald guest commentary, “Reserve three rivers for wild steelhead,” it is not in the best interest of our fisheries to close the release of hatchery fish into any of our rivers. There are many reasons why our waters are struggling to support our fisheries. Gill nets, habitat loss, pollution of our waters and an explosion of marine mammals are but a few examples. Where was the outrage over the fish consumption rate? Our hatcheries help mitigate these adverse obstacles and are necessary if we are to preserve this precious resource. The fact that a small group of misguided individuals can threaten this resource is, in fact, a threat to our salmon and steelhead.
