Explore: Creatures of the night by flashlight

Take a nighttime tour on the Northwest Stream Center’s elevated boardwalk and learn more about bats, insects and other creatures of the night at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10, and again at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19. The Stream Center is located at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

Ecologist Les Meade will lead all-ages groups of up to 10 adventurers on a half-mile walk through complex wetland and forest wildlife habitat. “Les is a very crazy chiropterist (bat biologist) and herpetologist (reptile expert) who we are in the process of converting into a stream ecologist,” said Adopt A Stream Foundation Director Tom Murdoch.

Cost is $7 Adopt A Stream Foundation members, $10 non-members. Reservations required. Bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red lens if you have one.

Scrub: Walk, car wash benefit Village services

Village Community Services holds a Friendship Walk, 5k and Car Wash on Sept. 26 at 114 N Olympic Ave., Arlington.

The car wash will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At 11:30 a.m., registration opens and the live entertainment begins, including music by Voices of the Village, a reptile show, dove release, face painting and $5 hot dog lunch.

A 1-mile Friendship Walk and a 5k route start at 1 p.m. Suggested donation is $25, which includes a Friendship Walk T-shirt.

Stroll: Learn about history on trail

Grab your walking shoes, hop on a bike or put the kids in the stroller and head to the Centennial Trail on Sept. 13 to learn some Snohomish County history.

The Snohomish County Historic Preservation Commission’s free Centennial Trail History Walk, set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include kids activities, storytellers, hands-on exhibits and historic artifacts at four sites along the 30 miles of historic rail line.

Trailheads with activities include Nakashima (32328 Highway 9, Arlington), Bryant (26804 Highway 9, Arlington), Machias (1624 Virginia St., Snohomish), and Snohomish (Pine and Maple).

Hunt: Treasure to be found in geocaching

Marysville Parks and Recreation offers a free “Geocaching for Beginners” event for all ages, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Rotary Ranch in Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road.

Geocaching is a family-friendly, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Join longtime “cacher” Margaret Dunn as you learn how to get started, equipment needs, types of caches and how to log a find.
