If I am permitted to ask a stupid question concerning Everett firefighter Curt Low, where was the fire in all of this? Sadly, there was none. (Aug. 27 article, “Everett firefighters drove drunken man nearly to Marysville, left him.”)
Over the years, firefighting has evolved from fighting fires to combatting the ills of an imploding society. People who have answered the call to serve and protect their communities know the mounting frustrations of dealing with these ills — drug and alcohol abuses, homelessness, domestic violence, criminals walking freely on the streets with rap sheets longer than Randy Johnson’s arm — just to name a few. And, yes, the politics. Always the politics.
Aside from this, I suppose one could argue that it is what it is, and emergency responders must somehow learn to handle all of it. It’s a lot to ask of them.
But I’m for Curt Low. Not just because he’s my nephew and godson, but because I know him, and I know that he is not the thoughtless, callous person that some people may perceive him to be from the news accounts of this story.
Curt is a war veteran with Navy Seal-type training for his job in the air-sea rescue. On one mission he narrowly escaped death, while some of his crew members were not so lucky. He carries this with him today.
Curt is a stand-up, no-nonsense kind of guy who you would like to have in your corner in a fight, and you could count on him to be there.
When I was a teacher in Marysville, my young students corresponded with Curt while he was overseas, and after returning home he visited our classroom, bringing T-shirts and Middle East mementos for everyone. The shirts depicted his unit, “The Desert Ducks.” The kids loved him.
As an ER nurse, Curt’s wife, Cecilia, also serves and protects her community and is no stranger to tragedy. No doubt they have helped the same unfortunate people, perhaps repeatedly.
I could go on, but I respectfully ask for your support of the Curt Low that I know and love.
