Nothing new with Chancellor and Seahawks

RENTON — It seems Dion Bailey’s slip didn’t spur the Seattle Seahawks and Kam Chancellor into action.

Wednesday came and went with no sign of Chancellor at the Seahawks’ Virginia Mason Athletic Center, meaning in all likelihood Seattle will be without its star strong safety for a second straight regular season game.

“I have nothing new to report to you,” Seahawks head coach Pete Caroll said Wednesday. “I wish I did, I really wish I did. We’d love to figure something out, but it hasn’t happened.”

Chancellor’s holdout reached day 48 Wednesday. Chancellor is seeking to renegotiate the four-year, $28 million contract extension he signed in 2013. But the Seahawks refuse to budge from their stance of not renegotiating contracts that have more than one year remaining. Chancellor’s extension runs through 2017, but his base salary is not guaranteed for 2016 and 2017.

Chancellor, who was set to make $4.55 million this season, forfeits one-seventeenth of his salary each week he misses during the regular season. Should he continue his holdout through the weekend he’ll surrender another $267,647.

There was some speculation that last Seattle’s 34-31 overtime loss at St. Louis on Sunday may prompt negotiations to resume. Particularly considering Bailey, Chancellor’s replacement at strong safety, fell down on the play in which the Rams tied the score with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

But Carroll said that isn’t the case.

“Nothing has changed,” Carroll said. “It’s never been a negotiation, it’s been conversations. Nothing’s changed, though.

“I’m just disappointed, like I know he is and everybody is that we haven’t found a way to get him here,” Carroll said. “That’s all, and we’re disappointed about it.”

Chancellor’s presence is missed both on and off the field. Not only is he a Pro Bowl performer, he’s a team leader who was the defensive captain last season. Nevertheless, cornerback Richard Sherman said Chancellor’s absence has not affected the locker room.

“I think we have a pretty strong locker room,” Sherman said. “I think guys know who they are. We have great players, great leaders. I don’t think they’re concerned at all about what’s going on (with Chancellor), they’re concerned about fixing things we need to fix this week for Green Bay.”

Injury update

Neither of the players who sat out last Sunday’s game against St. Louis because of injury practiced Wednesday. Linebacker Mike Morgan (hamstring), was listed as out through Friday, suggesting he will miss this Sunday’s game against Green Bay as well. Cornerback Tharold Simon (toe) was not listed on the injury report, but Carroll confirmed Simon did not practice Wednesday. Carroll said Simon would try to give it a go Thursday.

One other player did not participate in Wednesday’s practice as running back Marshawn Lynch sat out for non-injury reasons. Lynch also sat out practices last week for non-injury purposes.

Those listed as limited in practice Wednesday included linebacker Bobby Wagner (ankle), defensive end Michael Bennett (ankle) and fullback Will Tukuafu (foot).
