Arlington comes from behind to beat Oak Harbor

ARLINGTON — A little bit of rain and two-score deficit could not dampen the Arlington football team’s homecoming celebration.

The Eagles scored 35 unanswered points as they defeated visiting Oak Harbor 38-21 in Wesco 3A North action during Arlington’s homecoming game amid soggy conditions Friday.

Arlington (2-0 Wesco, 4-1 overall) remained tied for first place with Marysville Pilchuck, which defeated crosstown rival Marysville Getchell Friday night.

Oak Harbor fell to 1-1 in Wesco action and 2-2 overall.

Trailing 21-16 at the half, the Eagles scored the game’s final three touchdowns to take the lead and pull away from the Wildcats.

“In the first quarter we didn’t really move the ball,” Arlington coach Greg Dailer said. “We moved the ball well in the second quarter, and in the second half the defense just shut them down.”

A 2-yard touchdown grab by Kyle Bayer from Andrew Kalahar early in the third quarter gave Arlington a lead it didn’t relinquish.

The Eagles pushed their advantage to 31-21 at 11:21 in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Kalahar to Wyatt Bass, and Kalahar added a 16-yard scoring toss to Donavan Sellgren with 5:01 to play to complete the scoring.

Kalahar finished 26-of-40 for 382 yards and five touchdowns. The senior signal-caller threw seven incompletions in the first quarter and just seven more the rest of the way.

“He just caught fire,” Dailer said. “We had a drop and he wasn’t really on target early. But he really picked it up in the second quarter and we went from there.”

Bayer finished with eight grabs for 157 yards and three touchdowns. Devon Nutter carried 13 times for 48 yards and added four receptions for 57 yards.

Dyllan Harris gave Oak Harbor the early two-touchdown lead with a 12-yard touchdown reception and a 10-yard scoring jaunt as the Wildcats led 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Kalahar put the Eagles on the board with a 25-year field at 8:06 to go in the second. Princeton Lollar scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to push the Wildcats’ lead to 21-3, but Kalahar connected with Bayer for touchdown passes of 71 and 21 yards to trim the deficit to 21-16 after a failed two-point conversion attempt just before the half.
