GIG HARBOR — Bob Burton of Everett came from behind in the final round to win the 29th Washington State Senior Men’s Amateur championship on Oct. 1 at Canterwood Golf and Country Club.
Burton, who finished with a three-round total of 11-over-par 227, became the first player in history to win the Washington State Junior Amateur (1971), the Washington State Amateur (1975) and the Washington State Senior Amateur.
Winning the trifecta of state amateur titles “feels great,” said Burton, a 1972 graduate of Everett High School and a three-time winner of the Snohomish County Amateur (1973-75). “It is something I worked hard for, and I feel fortunate to have played at this level for so long.”
Burton finished one shot ahead of Keith Crimp of Ellensburg, Tom Hale of Lakewood and Larry Daniels of Seattle. Crimp and Daniels both bogeyed the 18th hole, and Hale birdied it. Daniels won this championship in 2009, Crimp won it in 2010, and Hale was runner-up last year.
“The course was in great shape and was playing difficult,” Burton said of his final round. “I putted real well, which is normally not my strong suit.”
Burton has twice won the Pacific Northwest Master-40 Championship (2006 and 2009). In 2006 he was named the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Senior Men’s Player of the Year, a year in which he qualified for the U.S. Senior Open and the U.S. Mid-Amateur. In 2009 he earned Senior Men’s Player of the Year honors from the Washington State Golf Association.
Red Raiders win
Luke Barzie rushed for a pair of touchdowns — both from 15 yards out — and Isaiah Lee returned a third-quarter interception 90 yards for a score as the Everett Red Raiders defeated Central Sound 31-6 in Northwest Junior College Football League action Sunday at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Raiders also got a 23-yard touchdown pass from Robert Calloway to Dan Nedat, and a 31-yard field goal from John Higgins.
The victory improved Everett’s record to 4-1. The Red Raiders, the four-time defending league champions, are tied with the Eastside Bulldogs for first place in the NWJCFL.
Central Sound dropped to 1-4-1.
