Prep girls soccer: Edmonds-Woodway 2, Arlington 0

PUYALLUP — The Warriors picked themselves up after a disappointing loss in Friday’s semifinal to beat their Wesco compatriots in the battle for third and fourth place on Saturday.

Emily Syberg and Molly Carden each scored first-half goals as Edmonds-Woodway (19-2-2) followed up its state championship campaign in 2014 with a third-place finish.

Edmonds-Woodway coach Bill LeCompte said that his team managed to flush Friday’s loss to Seattle Prep and come out focused on Saturday.

“We talked about it before we left the field, and we knew we had another game to play,” he said. “We put in the rearview, and when the girls came down for our team dinner on Friday they had a little bit of peace of mind. They knew they left everything on the field and that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

Syberg lofted a 15-yard shot into the right corner off a feed from Savannah Norton in the 23rd minute before Carden’s corner kick in the 36th minute caromed off the typically sure hands of Arlington goalkeeper Kat Sanchez and in for the Warriors’ second tally.

“We knew the matchup having just seen Arlington a few weeks ago,” LeCompte said. “Both sides had an argument that they might have been in the final today, but we were fortunate that we seemed to put our loss in the rearview a little bit quicker. I thought we dominated the first half quite well.”

Arlington applied more pressure after the break, but Edmonds-Woodway goalkeeper Hannah Hicks made a few key saves to preserve the shutout.
