The April 10 guest commentary, “Allow review of coal terminal to address concerns of all,” was absurd. The author stated that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers should consider business interests above Lummi Nation treaty rights when deciding whether or not the Cherry Point coal export terminal can be built. The Army Corps must honor the Lummi’s treaty rights. Dismissing them would set a shameful precedent for others to follow suit.
Pitting jobs against environmental issues is an outdated point of view. Investing in and supporting green energy jobs will put us on the right track to clean up the environmental mess created by big corporations that care about little beyond their bottom line. After all, what is the point of developing more polluting business on a dying planet?
