CHICAGO — Jake Arrieta’s bid to become the second pitcher to throw consecutive no-hitters ended with a broken-bat single on his fifth pitch.
The bat of Milwaukee’s Jonathan Villar shattered as he blooped an opposite-field liner over third base on a 2-2 sinker leading off Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Cincinnati’s Johnny Vander Meer is the only big leaguer to pitch no-hitters in consecutive starts, beating the Boston Braves and Brooklyn in June 1938.
Arrieta started a week after his 119-pitch no-hitter at Cincinnati thanks to an off day in the Cubs’ schedule and Wednesday night’s rainout. It was his second no-hitter in 11 regular-season starts amid a stretch in which he was 20-1 with an 0.86 ERA in 24 starts.
