Pete Carroll pleased as Seahawks rookie minicamp wraps up

Here’s some notes from the third and final day of Seahawks rookie minicamp:

– Seahawks coach Pete Carroll described it as a “real good three days.” He was high on Seattle’s draft class, mentioning guard Germain Ifedi, defensive tackle Jarran Reed and running back C.J. Prosise unprompted. Carroll was also complimentary of all three quarterbacks who were in camp — Jake Heaps, Trevone Boykin and Vernon Adams — saying the team was going to have to make difficult decisions there.

– Carroll talked about it being the best camp he’s had with regards to exchanges between the center and the quarterbacks. The fact that center Joey Hunt, Seattle’s sixth-round pick, and Boykin played together for four seasons at TCU surely played a role in that.

– Seattle drafted three running backs in Prosise, Alex Collins and Zac Brooks. Carroll made it sound like he’s looking at Collins as an early-down back, while Prosise and Brooks will be third-down backs because of their backgrounds as receivers. Carroll was particularly complimentary of Prosise’s ability as a receiver — Prosise ran routes with the receivers in drills Sunday — and he’s excited about the possibility of Prosise being able to line up as a receiver.

– Carroll called Reed a “crucial pick for us.” The Seahawks worked Reed more at the 3-technique position Sunday, but Carroll said Reed has the flexibility to play either 3-technique or over center.

– Carroll was very guarded with his praise for the undrafted free agents, not wanting to give anything away with regards to what the team plans to do. But he did name undrafted free agent linebackers Steve Longa and Montese Overton as having had good camps.

– Overton was unable to finish Sunday’s scrimmages after having to be helped off the field with some sort of leg injury. However, it didn’t seem too serious as he remained on the sidelines.

– One player who didn’t take part Sunday was seventh-round pick Kenny Lawler, who sat out because he was feeling tightness. However, Carroll said Lawler had a great camp and was very complimentary of Lawler’s hands and catching range.

– And finally, there was a nice moment for Archbishop Murphy High School graduate Taniela Tupou. Tupou, who attended camp on a tryout, spent the final two days of camp as a full back — he was a defensive tackle at the University of Washington. Well, he showed what he can do by catching a touchdown pass on a goal-line play-action pass during the scrimmage. Could he have shown enough to earn a contract? If he doesn’t get a contract, he at least created a really cool memory.
