Jackson High grad accepts scholarship

Matthew Pyles has accepted a scholarship from Middle Tennessee State University.

The 2012 Henry M. Jackson High School graduate is one of 20 students selected from among numerous applicants for the Buchanan Fellowship, the highest academic award given to students entering the university.

In addition to earning a high score on the ACT and maintaining a high grade-point average, Pyles has distinguished himself by earning a Commendable Scholar designation for the 2012 National Merit program. He was also elected Speaker of the House for the Washington State Youth and Government program.

Pyles received the Lionel Hampton Jazz Award for leadership, was two-year director of the Jazz I Choir at Jackson High School, and earned three letters in Jackson High School’s Honor Wind Ensemble, a group he performed with this year at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Pyles is interested in studying music education, theater and mass communications. He is the son of Marilyn and Ted Pyles of Everett.
