VANCOUVER, Wash. — Clark County health officials say a Vancouver middle school student has been diagnosed with an active case of tuberculosis, but they think the risk to other students is low.
Officials say the Covington Middle School student is receiving treatment and is no longer contagious. The student was not identified.
In a letter that was being sent home with students Friday, the county health officer, Dr. Alan Melnick, says health officials think it’s unlikely the student has spread the illness to other students or staff.
Still, Clark County Public Health is recommending that 100-200 students and staff members who were in the same classroom as the infected student be tested for TB.
Melnick says there are about 10 to 20 cases of tuberculosis a year in Clark County.
