The following events are scheduled in Snohomish County in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday is Monday:
Today: The 2014 Prodigies for Peace essay and art contest winners will be recognized at a free Diversity Partnering Reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carl Gipson Senior Center, 3025 Lombard Ave., Everett. Sponsored by the city of Everett, Snohomish County, United Way of Snohomish County and the YMCA of Snohomish County.
Area high school and middle school students were asked to write essays answering this two-part question: “On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of his dreams for our nation. Fifty years later, what are your dreams for this nation, and how would you suggest the nation achieve them?”
Thursday: Hip-hop artist Talib Kweli will be the keynote speaker at a free Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration featuring music and dance at 6:30 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. Doors open 6 p.m. Hosted by the city of Lynnwood, Edmonds Community College and the Edmonds School District.
Kweli has collaborated with Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and other performers. His topic Thursday is “Hip-Hop as a Tool for Social Activism.”
Sunday: The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration, featuring the Martin Luther King Community Choir, will be held at 3 p.m. at Spirit of Grace Methodist Church, 3530 Colby Ave., Everett. Keynote speaker is Julia Hampton, co-pastor of Seattle International Church.
The choir has formed annually for more than 25 years to honor King’s memory with gospel music and other inspirational songs. Presented by the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee, the event will also feature a saxophone soloist and young hip-hop performers.
Monday: St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church on Whidbey Island will mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with its annual “Blessed Are the Peace Makers” community gathering. The event begins at noon with a salad lunch, followed by the 1 p.m. service. The church is at 5217 S. Honeymoon Bay Road, Freeland.
Tuesday: Barry Scott will discuss Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement and portray King giving some of his inspiring speeches from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Everett Community College, Henry M. Jackson Conference Center, 2000 Tower St., Everett. Free and open to public.
Jan 29: Michael Eric Dyson, a Georgetown University sociology professor and author of “April 4, 1968,” “Is Bill Cosby Right?” and other books, will be featured in a broadcast of a lecture titled “Marching On: The Next 50 Years” at 7 p.m. at Everett Community College’s Henry M. Jackson Conference Center, Jackson 101, 2000 Tower St., Everett. Sponsored by Washington State University, in partnership with EvCC.
