MONROE — Monroe High School has scheduled a benefit event for Free the Children, an international organization aimed at empowering young people.
“We Are One Night” offers an opportunity for people to see how students spend their time. The event begins with a 20-booth fair that opens at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Each booth will feature a Valentine’s Day activity geared toward younger children and will provide information on a school club.
A lasagna dinner is to follow at 6:30. The jazz choir, drama department and a speaker from Free the Children are to provide entertainment.
The evening is part of a week-long event at the high school to inform people about community and global issues. Students are expected to sign up for community service during the week.
Motivational speaker Houston Kraft is scheduled to address students in an assembly. Kraft grew up in Snohomish and attended Snohomish High School.
This year’s theme, “Under One Roof,” focuses on changing the culture at Monroe High to eliminate bullying.
The students have set a goal to raise $10,000 to help build a school in Africa through several service projects.
Student leaders Ginny Piluras and Tellis Aucoin are in charge of the event.
Entry to the fair costs $3. The suggested donation for the lasagna dinner is $5.
“I’m excited mostly for the community to come to see how the school works together, to see the different clubs and how they work together to create unity throughout the school,” Piluras said.
