MOUNT ST. HELENS — Mount St. Helens is reopening the Coldwater Ridge visitor center for the first time since it closed in 2008.
The News Tribune reported the center has been renovated with more than $700,000 in economic stimulus funds.
It will serve as an educational venue for monument staff and outside groups.
And the center will have a new name: The Science and Learning Center at Coldwater.
The center was closed after the 2008 season because of dwindling operational funds and a growing list of maintenance issues.
It will reopen on May 18, when the monument celebrates the 32nd anniversary of the 1980 volcano eruption.
Coldwater also will serve as the center of monument operations in the fall, when Johnston Ridge Observatory is closed.
