Neighbors will be moving on in Lakewood race

LAKEWOOD — Incumbent Lakewood School Board Director Oscar Escalante will face his neighbor and challenger Michael Blank on the general election ballot for the four-year seat representing the Smokey Point neighborhood.

Escalante received 570 votes or about 41 percent of the vote to Blank’s 545 or about 39 percent. Pete Espinoza, a longtime school volunteer, was third, receiving 279 votes or about 20 percent of the vote.

Escalante, 58, said that he was running on his record and would begin campaigning after the primary. Blank, 43, who before the election had never been to a school board meeting and does not have children, wants to see more Lakewood High School students steered toward trade schools to become plumbers, carpenters and truck drivers.

Both candidates support the proposed February ballot issue regarding the sale of bonds to fund a remodel of Lakewood High School.
