PASCO — The year the first Boeing 747 was delivered and The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” topped the charts, Marilyn Van Hollebeke took a temporary job driving a school busy for the tiny Star School District northeast of Pasco.
She stuck around a little longer than expected. The Tri-City Herald reported Hollebeke is retiring after 43 years driving a little yellow bus to and from a small elementary school.
She drove her last route this past week. She said she has no idea how many miles she has driven over the years. But she does have a lot of memories from the time she encouraged a rattlesnake to move along with a stick to the baby bat that hitched a ride.
She said it’s been a blessing to be part of the community and to watch the kids grow up.
