OLYMPIA — Owners of 52 properties in Snohomish County should not have to pay Sound Transit’s property tax starting in 2019 under a new law signed by Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday.
The tax is part of the $54 billion Sound Transit 3 expansion approved by voters in 2016. Owners of these particular properties didn’t get to vote on the plan but have been required to pay the tax.
That’s because their property straddles the Sound Transit boundary, with part of it inside the district and part outside. The portion on which they live is outside the border.
Under the new law, Sound Transit can only levy its tax on whole parcels in its taxing district, which means these properties would not be subject to the tax. The change will apply with billings in 2019.
Senate Bill 6475 passed by votes of 47-1 in the Senate and 98-0 in the House.
