SEDRO-WOOLLEY — A Sedro-Woolley company is offering a $500 reward for the return of a section of a log with tree rings dated back to 1600.
Events such as the Declaration of Independence and Civil War are marked by the ring growth. The tree died in 1895 when it was nearly 300 years old.
The crosscut section is about 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep. Until a couple of weeks ago it was on display in Hamilton on property owned by Janicki Industries, a Sedro-Woolley engineering and manufacturing company.
Marketing director Kathleen Olson says the piece of Skagit Valley logging history weighs several hundred pounds and would have required heavy equipment to move.
Olson says she hopes it was taken by a history buff and not for firewood.
