50 years ago (1964)
It was official— Monroe was now a 3rd class city. The fourth class town passed into history with the swearing-in of all new city officials last night. They were Jack Law, mayor; Dick Cedergreen, Herb Schwartz, Joe Moore, Allen Borlin, Elliot Cone, E.J. Schrag and Lee Kirby, council members; Storrs Clough, attorney; Ann Francis, clerk; and Marcella Davis, treasurer.
New staff members in the Marysville schools were Robert Haskell, principal at Sunnyside Elementary School; Stuart Marshlain, Sharon Engstrom, Joan Heikell, Karen Doty and Helen Vandenburgh.
25 years ago (1989)
Gary Allen used a high-pressure water spray to wash the algae from one of the city water transmission lines that ran parallel to the Hewitt Avenue trestle. For a week the city utilities department was cleaning the pipes that carried water from Lake Champlain to the city. Next they would be repainted.
Marysville Police Chief John Turner hoped that square would be the shape to come in the rapidly growing north county city. Marysville had irregular and somewhat illogical boundaries which created confusion for police and fire officials who sometimes had trouble telling where the city began and ended.
