50 years ago (1963)
Charley Krogh, retiring president of the Everett Rock and Gem Club, handed a gavel made of petrified maple wood to his successor, H.M. Dyer. The club had more than 100 members and was preparing for its annual show at Floral Hall in May.
Art Qually was the new president of the Snohomish County Independent Automobile Dealers, succeeding Larry Thornberry of Thornberry Motors. Qually was with Earl Meyer. George Karr of Karr’s Korral was vice president and Floyd Olsen of Independent Motors was secretary-treasurer.
25 years ago (1988)
Raymond Christensen had more than a casual interest in a Jan. 13 Communities story by Allen Miller concerning the Chicago, Milwaukee and Puget Sound Railway and its early history here. Christensen was born on July 26, 1911, the same day the line’s first freight train arrived in Everett.
Vernon Wray of Arlington, who liked to swim in icy water, was working up a Jan. 31 swim in the Snohomish River at Snohomish to drum up interest for covering the city’s swimming pool. The Hal Moe memorial pool was slated for closure next year because of high operating costs.
