Solar panels on county building will power cars

A work crew from Solis Electric in Snohomish installed the third of eight rows of solar panels atop the Snohomish County Administration Building West on Thursday morning as an abundance of unused, yet appreciated, solar energy beamed down on Port Gardner and the city of Everett.

Snohomish County began installing nearly 100 solar panels at its campus in Everett this week.

The panels, paid for with about $450,000 in federal stimulus money, will supply electricity to vehicle-charging stations in the parking garage for the county’s future fleet of electric cars. Arlington-based Silicon Energy built the panels. Solis Electric is completing the installation.

Snohomish County owns two electric vehicles and plans to purchase about a dozen more within the next 12 to 18 months.
