SULTAN— You can speak your mind on the 2011 proposed budget tonight.

The City Council will hear comments form residents about the budget at 7 tonight at the Sultan Community Center, 319 Main St.

The main issue the council will consider in the $1.75 million budget is an increase in sewer rates. City staff presented four options to the council which included rising up to $13.85 a month for the next two years. The city needs to raise the money to pay off a $1 million loan.

Not wanting to raise rates, the council sought to use half of the city’s reserves instead.

This would bring risks. If that’s what the council decides, Sultan would have to postpone replacing sewer pipelines for a year, city administrator Deborah Knight said.
