Crews hired by the Washington State Department of Transportation have started work on the I-405 northbound peak-use shoulder lane project. Drivers may see daytime shoulder closures as crews clear brush and trim trees to prepare for installing electronic lane control signs and building a new noise wall.
The new lane is expected to open to traffic this spring. When complete, drivers and buses will be able to use the right shoulder between Highway 527 and I-5 as an additional general-purpose lane during times with the heaviest congestion. Overhead signs will alert drivers to when the lane is open to traffic.
The $7 million project will be paid for with toll revenue from the I-405 express toll lanes. The evening commute in Snohomish County is longer since the state expanded the interstate south of there and adding tolling.
